Help Me Out

I am getting my girlfriend of 2 years a promise ring. But i am curious as to the proper ettiquite of the process of giving it to her. Some of my friends have told me that i should get on one knee when i give it to her, but i dont know if thats a good idea, i feel like i should save that for the real proposal. Help me out!
