I have a couple of questions. First, What is the proper timeline for persons to RSVP? My wedding is on 8/14 and I have the response card for 7/14. I am not sure of the proper ediquette. Secondly, we are being married on the beach and our reception is outside overlooking the beach. I want people to dress casual but not to casual, meaning it is not necessary for men to come in suites and ties. How do I phrase the note card, so people are not confused what to wear?
I think about 2 weeks is the proper response time.
Invitations go out 4-6weeks before the wedding, so 1 month before is definitly too soon to ask for a response.
As for the invitation wording, I'm pretty sure no one will show up to a beach wedding in a tux. I wouldn't really worry about it, just verbally spread the word.
Still, I would feel comfortable placing a note card in the invitation regarding attire. Word of mouth would be easier, I agree. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to contact everyone and/or spread the word about what people should feel comfortable wearing to our wedding. I would still appreciate any advice regarding this issue.
I would say at the very latest order them 3 weeks before you want to mail them out.
Remember to take into account the time it will take to address them or have someone else address them.
Also, when you find the invite you want check into how long it will take to receive them, every company varies, this will also help you decide when to order.
As to the beach wedding attire, I definitly wouldn't put an insert in the invite.
You know your family and friends, do you think they will show up dressed super formal? If not don't worry about it. If so, then you can either tell invited people you come across that it will be a more casual affair or you can just let your guests dress as they feel comfortable. I promise you won't have to call each guest and tell them personally, word spreads!
About the Out-of-Town Invites:
Yes still mail them in the same time frame.
Most likely, the majority of your out of town guests will be your family, and you've probably already contacted them regarding your wedding. So they may not remember the exact time, but they already know that your big day is coming up.
There is another option for you though, Save-The-Date Cards, these go out 4-12months before the wedding specifically for out-of-town guest, these are usually used for destination or weekend weddings, but might serve your purpose as well.
