Me and my fiance are getting married in September. Almost all of our guests are travelling for the event, and have to endure a cost just to attend. We have been together for 10 years and have the household items we need. Due to this, and the cost of travel to our guests, we are requesting no gifts. How can we word this on our invitation so guests don't feel slighted?
What a thoughtful bride you are:) I don't think there is a way to word this, or anything at all about gifts, into the actual wedding invitation. Try word of mouth through relatives, and/or friends. Spreading the word is actually very effective. Good luck and congratulations.
When my aunt got remarried, she put a line on her invitations that said something like "Having you with us on our special day is the only gift we ask for." There are other variations of this, try searching the web for one that feels right to you.
And a high-five to you for being such a cool bride! It's refreshing to read a post that's NOT about finding a nice way to ask for money instead of gifts. :)

I would not put it on the invitation though. Since most are coming from out of town, have you thought about sending separately some travel information (you know hotel, weekend itinerary, things to do in the area)? I would think it would be better to put the no gift request on something like that. Perhaps something like "We are thrilled that you will be celebrating our special day with us and we look forward to seeing you. Please, no gifts - your being here is truly gift enough for us. We will be honored by your presence."
Be prepared though. No matter how you insist upon no gifts, people will still give you gifts!
