Bridal Shower Etiquette

My shower is in 3 weeks. Earlier this week I received a gift (from our registry - and sent to our home) from an out of town friend who won't be able to make it the shower.

I called my mother to ask if we could open it and she said yes. We did - and we sent a thank you that same day.

Now my mother is saying we shouldn't have opened it.

What's the rule on this one? I figure if they send it to my house - I should open it! Right? My sister even knew that my friend was having the gift sent to our home and she never mentioned that I couldn't open it.

Yes, you can open it. Actually Wedding gifts sent to your home should be opened immediately and thank you's sent before the Wedding. You did fine!
Isn't that exciting your first gift! Good Luck.

Re: Bridal Shower Etiquette
I was curious about this one as well. I looked in all of the bridal books that i have at home. Only a few even mentioned this specific question though. But all were in agreement that ANY gift sent to the home should be opened immediately and thank you cards sent ASAP.

Also, another reason I think that your Mother is wrong...What were you supposed to do with the gift? Wait until the day of your shower to open it or lug it and possibly others to the shower site and open there, just to lug it all back home again? What sense does that make?

I agree, you did just fine and I am sure the person who sent the gift would agree and is thrilled to receive a thank you so quickly.

Congratulations and good luck

Re: Bridal Shower Etiquette
I think if they dont have the decency to come send the gift back or donate them. THey are not your real friends!!

Re: Bridal Shower Etiquette
As Me points out ...about you having to lug the gift to the Shower. If the gift giver wanted it opened at the Shower she would have made arrangements with the hostess or another family member to have it delivered to them, so they could lug it to the shower and then be opened. By her sending directly to the Bride, she intended on you receiving it and then opening it.
