Hello: my son is engaged to a wonderful girl from Brazil. We are so happy for them. They presently live in Brazil. I believe they intend to have a civil ceremony (?) there and come here later for a religious cerremony and reception. I'm not sure of what is expected from us, here. Who pays for what, with regards to weddings/receptions, etc. In Brazil. Are there any special customs regarding gifts, etc.? (parent to parent, parent to children) Any light you could shed would be much appreciated. Thank you for time and help.
Also have a son to be married to an American born girl who is half Brazilian. They are living in Brazil and would like to be married there. I too would like to know of the financial obligations/traditions/responsibilities of the groom and his parents. Thanks for sending this information on to me.

I guess my response came in too late, but if I can still be of any help...
Civil ceremonies in Brazil tend to be pretty informal. However, if it has already been confirmed that there will be a religious wedding and that it will be funded by the bride's parents, which tends to be the norm, then the groom's parents pay for the civil wedding and help him organise it. However, nowadays, what normally happens is that the couple ends up paying for everything. Parents from both sides can help and you should feel free to ask your son if he needs anything. (Please do so, as Brazilians are much bigger into emotional support than they are into financial assistance.) They'll both appreciate the fact that you offered to help them in anything they need.
As to presents, only the groom and bride get presents.
To the bride and the groom you can send cash (via bank transfer) instead of worrying with shipping something off to Brazil. Then, you can send a card in the post as you do in England or in the US. I guarantee it will be greatly appreciated.
