I'm getting married in December and am doing both a winter theme and incorporating some Xmas ideas into it.
Perhaps you could do a "White Winter Wonderland" sort of theme. Do a lot with snowflakes -- your centerpieces could all be done in white with whatever color your bridesmaids dresses are as the accent colors. You could also do some evergreen in the arrangements. Your florist could take pinecones and spray them white (or the accent color you choose).
If you want to stay away from Xmas items, I'd stay away from red - but you could still do the green.

I'm 23 and have been married 4 years already, but I am planning a Winter Wonderland wedding theme for my older brother's wedding in a few weeks. Smallbudget. Cheap ideas. It will be at my parent's house and they have 45 strands of white lights already decorating every tree, bush, and rafter. I have already done several of family and friend's weddings. Want some ideas? #1. For the centerpieces I am cutting off dead branches about 2 ft. High from trees around the neighborhood, spray painting them pure white and sprinkling them with "angel dust". I'm putting them in silver or icy blue spray painted clay pots and standing them up with gravel or sand in the bottom. Be sure to trim off the lower twigs to make it look like a real winter tree. Cover the gravel with that fake cottony snow stuff and a little glitter. For added touch I will hang a couple miniature bulbs from random branches (in silver or blue) and hot glue a few tiny iridescent beads on the top of some twigs and on the snow to make it look like fallen snow. I will also make a few large versions of these trees and cover them with twinkle lights and place them around the patio. #2 We have a 10' by 10' white tent that we hang icicle lights around the top inside, I'll hang a white paper "snowflake cascade" (shindigz.com @ $5) from the middle, and hang iridescent snowflakes (all sizes) from different heights with fishing line all throughout the tent (from afar they look like they are floating). I'm ordering a plain white tiered cake from the grocery store ($100) and I'm taking white pointsettias and painting them with frothy egg whites and sprinkling them with bakers sugar (it's finer). They harden and sparkle overnight. I'll decorate the cake with these hanging over onto the next layer and surround the cake with the tulle and blue/white lights to make it looke wintery. You could also cover the table with the fake snow. #3 The guest favors are going to be half snowflake ornaments and the other half decorated snowflake cookies. #4 The aisle seats of the ceremony will have a big white bow and a single frosted ornament hanging from the middle(facing the aisle) #5 Because it's actually taking place outside at night and it's gonna be chilly...I'm carrying the theme into the beverages and serving "white chocolate hot chocolate" and "mulled cider". We almost bought plain white mugs (3 for $1) and stenciled snowflakes on them with ceramic paint for every guest. Then they could use it for the toast and take it home with them. Save on styrofoam! #6 To save money on linens we are stenciling the paper table cloths with snowflakes and sprinkling snowflake confetti and fake snow around the centerpieces. Lot's more ideas, but I'm afraid this is getting too long. Oh, one more thing... The bride is wearing a white fur wrap and the bridesmaids are having their hands in white fur muffs. If they are too much money you can also rent them from a costume place... I also think it would be neat to get a fog or dry ice machine and have a white cloud settled on the floor during the reception (especially if it's an ugly floor) :) hope this helps!
I would suggest using white with blue and purple/violet. Those colors usually compliment the skies of the season. And any shade of them would work. An ivory with a deep plum would be elegant and rich. White with navy/midnight blue would be crisp and refined. White with pastels would be delicate and whimsical. White with bright blue and violet would be bright and fun. (I would probably go with the ivory and plum myself, but every one has different tastes.)
I'm having a winter wedding on New Years...with no Christmas themes involved. First we are getting trees without leaves from the forest and putting white lights on them to decorate, and using quilt batting as the snow. We are also letting the flower girls drop fake snow instead of flowers, out of cute little snowbuckets that we got from walmart and decorated. Were using sugared fruit to decorate the table tops, with round glass globes that have snowflake candles in them. We also made an archway out of light blue/silver/white ballons at the door to the reception. When the guests are entering I am playing "winter" songs (not christmas songs) such as sleight ride, winter wonderland, and let it snow, I got them off of the internet sang by frank sinatra and they sound great! Lots of white candles...and greens, even a little missletoe with curly willow for the butioneers (maybe a lil more christmas than you want )..but these are some of my ideas...Email me if you would like more! kissesfromstacy@aol.com

I am doing a snowflake theme for my December 31st wedding. Check out www.orientaltrading.com for HOARDS of snowflake things including bubbles, confetti, ornaments, tablecloths, and other really cute (and cheap) stuff for favors. Also you can get 80 yds of white tulle on ebay for about 35 dollars -- put white lights in with it for a great effect. Also go to askginka.com and look up winter themes. Hi. I just got married Nov.15 and had a winter wedding. I chose my colors to be Navy,silver,and white. Also the irridesent is a nice touch. We used cotten ball with irridesent glitter flakes around my cake for snow. My tables had pine needles and cones slightly covered in silver. Lots of white christmas lights. And a winter cake. Blue with white snow icing. It was Beautiful. And the blue for the girls dresses glowed they were perfect. Everyone loved my ideas.
Hi there, just read your message. I too am having a January wedding but not until 2005. I have thinking of going with all white for my tables including white fake snow, little white lights, white candles and silver as accents. I don't want it to be Christmas'ee either so I am staying away from too much in the way of tree boughs, holly, etc. Seeing as January is nearly over, I hope your wedding was wonderful. Would love to hear any of your ideas as well.
I originally thought about "all white" too, but then thought about what the pictures would look like (you know -- white cat in a snowstorm) and decided that I needed a little color. Since we were getting married at night I added navy blue to the scheme of things. My little girl attandants wore navy blue velvet dresses and I used navy blue table cloths and cups and white napkins, plates and utensils. The centerpieces were floating candles that were blue and silver snowflakes with iridescent stones in the water. We set the bowls on silver mylar circles (you can get these in the wedding supply area of your craft store -- they're like the tulle circles only they're mylar!) so that there would be a light reflective quality. We then scattered blue silver and white snowflake confetti on the tables and it was GORGEOUS. We used totally white silk poinsettas that had a glittery quality to them -- like white poinsettas in an ice storm -- we are currently having the after-effects of an ice storm now and the sun shining on the ice coated bushes and trees are very similar to the effect we achieved with these flowers.
One of my friends made a crystal beaded bouquet for me -- again it looks remarkably like the results of the recent ice storm around here!

An ice sculpture of a swan and two columns was center piece. Six tables surrounded it with white table cloths and beige overlays. Chairs covered in white with beige bows. The centerpieces were caliliys in a very, very tall vase (10 inch plastic pipe sprayed silver). Tulle was wound around the vase to soften the look. The vase was hed up by glass blocks (3 in a triangle and vase in the middle.) Tall sprigs of grey green stuff and silver and crystal things with the caliliys. Tables were set with china (rented for 3.00 a place) on a silver charger.. Paid $1.00 for each. Place settings had a little silver frame (paid about 1.50 for each on sale during the summer) and a friend wrote each name in caligraphy . Beautiful settings..... Used clear marble things to throw around the table for the ice affect. The wedding was simply gorgeous. By the way we draped gossamer (prom fabric) from ceiling in four pieces and hung those round christmas light ball things (buy at Walmart) over the swan. The ice sculpture made the entire scene ...
