Baby Shower |
Today is our special day. Mom has been looking forward to this day since the baby shower invitation arrived in the mail. She opened it with care. Immediately, it put a smile on her face and lightness in her heart. The tiny baby pictured there bordered with flowers and lace reminded her that soon she will have her own little one to hold. After sharing it with dad she put it straight away into my baby book. Imagine--I have a baby book and I am not even born yet. Then came our first dilemma--what to wear. Mom wanted to find the perfect outfit to wear for this special occasion. Unfortunately, not much seems to fit us anymore. But alas mom picked out just the right dress. It is stylish and comfortable enough to wear all day.
Standing at the door mom realizes that she has been invited to many baby showers, but this one differs from all of the other invitations. This one is for us. I can hear our family and friends have gathered to celebrate at our baby shower. A baby shower sign, pastel balloons and ribbons cover the door welcoming us into the house. As we enter, no one can believe how much we have grown. "You look beautiful." I hear Auntie Grace say. Uncomfortable is more like it. It's getting more cramped in here by the day. I try to stretch.
"It's a baby shower tea party!" I hear mom exclaim. "What a wonderful baby shower theme." The decorations are beautiful: The lace tablecloth, flowers, baby shower plates and napkins. You cannot imagine all of the baby shower supplies that have been gathered for this event. Special homemade dark and white chocolates made with plastic molds in the shape of spring flowers. Pink and blue glass baby pacifiers placed around the table. And each guest takes home their very own cellophane wrapped bag of treats. Mom peaks into hers: Soaps in the shape of lambs and duckies, a flower candle and a little porcelain tea cup to remember the day.
Mom's tummy is grumbling. They better feed us quick. The hostess has placed silver trays around the table filled with finger sandwiches, chicken salad, strawberries, mini cakes and cookies. The food looks and smells wonderful. Tea is poured from great-grandma's tea pot. Mom's eyes tear up. She loves the sentimental stuff. Mom walks around the table taking in all of the work that has gone into this special day just for us. Mom sinks into her chair and places a plate full of delicious food to rest on her tummy. I hear our family and friends chatting and laughing. What a beautiful way to celebrate. Everyone goes back for more, including mom, until she is satisfied.
Mom sits up. It's time for the baby shower games. Mom's friends must have been working hard to come up with fun games. They all gather around in a circle. Sheets of paper and pens are handed out. First they guess my weight, then my height, my birthday. These games are fun. Mom stands and I feel a string around mom's tummy. Now they are guessing her size! Mom is a little out of breath. These games must be a lot of work. Just then one of mom's friends presents a tray filled with baby supplies. The guests have two minutes to memorize the items on the tray. Once the tray is covered, with pens in hand, they write everything they saw. Under mom's breath I hear, "three baby bottles, six safety pins, baby lotion, baby soap, soft rattle, silver spoon…"; she is thinking hard. When the game is over mom realizes that while she did not remember all the items, she may keep them to use for me. She likes that.
The hostess clears the table and the baby shower cake is brought to the table. Ribbon's and bows and flowers cover the cake. "We welcome You Little One" is written across the top. The cake is filled with white chocolate and raspberry filling--mom's favorite. Mom is touched; no detail has been overlooked in making this a special day for us. It has been a day filled with great baby shower ideas.
"Come sit here and open your baby shower gifts." I hear Grandma Tina say. Mom sits amongst a pile of presents. She sighs, in her heart she feels truly overwhelmed by their generosity. Mom's friends have filled a basket with the most unique baby shower gifts. Next she opens some homemade baby shower gifts these are the ones mom will treasure. Two of the homemade gifts include a soft white baby blanket made just for me and a beautiful heart baby quilt embroidered by Great-Aunt Betty. There are so many baby shower ideas and gifts surrounding me it is more than my little mind can grasp. In the end the biggest baby shower surprise, my aunties bring out the antique cradle mom had wanted just for me. Here come the tears. Now mom says she is really ready for me. So here I come!
