Met and Fell in Love at Fort Bragg |
Ricardo and I were active duty soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. We were introduced by mutual friends April 2004, 2 weeks before I left for Warrant Officer Basic Course in Alabama. When he turned around to greet me and smiled, it was love at first sight. My heart melted. We began dating shortly after and throughout my course, we wrote to one another. From the beginning he was my rock that kept me going throughout the difficult training I endured.
When I returned from the Candidate and Basic course, the Army moved me to another post at Fort Hood, Texas. He visited me every month on Holiday weekends. The distance was hard but we held on to one another and did not let go.
Our prayers were answered when he was accepted into the Officer Training Corps in the city I lived. When he moved down, I was training again at the National Training Center in California. When I came home in August, I was absolutely delighted to see him.
He proposed to me the evening of his birthday, 30 October 2005, as we rode on a horse and carriage in Downtown Austin. He got on his knee and said “The only thing I want for my birthday is for you to be my wife, Will you marry me”? I was totally speechless and left him on his knees without an answer, I thought I was going to pass out. After I asked him if he was serious, I said Yes over and over again.
Unfortunately, I had to leave again only 3 months after he had moved down. This time I was headed for a deployment to Iraq. Our love was truly going to be tested.
I am now in my 10th month of this year long deployment. Ricardo has been so good to me throughout my deployment, sending me cards and boxes full of goodies. We started wedding planning and have already reserved our ceremony and reception at Villa Antonia in Austin.
Although the distance has been difficult many times in our relationship, our love and faith is so strong it overcomes any bumps on our road. I am truly blessed I have Prince Charming by my side.
