Historic 14th century Duns Castle is situated in the heart of the rolling hills, fields and trees of the beautiful Scottish Borders on the edge of the little market town of Duns.

We have total seclusion although shops bars and restaurants are within walking distance.

The family of Hay have owned the Castle since 1696, and along with their dedicated staff welcome guests to their home, which retains a very intimate and personal feel in spite of its historic grandeur and furnishings, and the quiet professionalism of their approach.

The main Castle sleeps up to 25 and there are ancillary houses sleeping up to a further 25. Groups of up to 60 may be seated to dine in the great hall. There are ample grounds for marquees, sporting and leisure activities.

Introduction

Duns Castle is a rare and exceptional 14th century tower house, still intact but with extensive additions over the centuries to provide a fine Gothic structure that is at once imposing and fascinating.

Since 1696 it has been lived in by the Hay family, and still remains their private home.

Duns Castle gives a serenity and sense of timelessness rare in the modern world.

The family now welcome guests to share it with them. All are made to feel utterly at home, with quiet unobtrusive service and the personal attention of the current generation of the Hay family. There is a tremendous warmth in the rich interior with comfort and authenticity being the key words. The food is simple, genuine, fresh and Scottish, and the staff willing and enthusiastic.

Weddings and Parties

The castle is quite simply the best wedding venue that any couple could have, whether you are one couple or a party of sixty.

THE RECEPTION:

This can take any form you wish - a Scottish tea, with your champagne/sparkling wine and possibly the cake/speeches, followed later by perhaps the piper/dancer entertainment and then a sit-down dinner or stand up buffet for numbers larger than 60: or you can have canapes, or no food and an earlier dinner - we'll discuss formats with you when you visit or by phone.

Details and costs are all are in our literature, on request, and many helpful guidelines. Our administrator will help you plan the entire day and our staff will ensure that it runs smoothly.

THE DINNER:

Dinner in the main 14th century dining hall is a memorable occasion. We provide good freshly prepared Scottish produce and liaise with you on menus. We cater for special needs if notified. There is a reasonably priced in-house wine list. Additional meals may be provided if requested, (lunches, teas). Own wines may be provided in payment of corkage charges.

THE ENTERTAINMENT:

We highly recommend the piper/ dancers performance (about 40 mins. - very Scottish, very professional but charming) before dinner - after dinner you may want a band, a ceilidh, a discotheque, or just tapes and a quiet time; it depends on age groups! THE ACCOMMODATION:

Our prices are based on the assumption that most if not all the group will stay 'in-house' - and our B&B rates are very reasonably priced to make that possible.

Any overspill can be accommodated locally, sometimes even in our own holiday properties on the estate, to keep the party together.

Normally you will want to come and see us, look at the rooms and allocate your guests yourselves. For that reason we do not take individual bookings from guests at a wedding.

Babysitters can usually be booked. There is a flexible chauffered transport service within half a mile. Most of our rooms are large and we can, on request, accommodate children in their parents room.

Corporate and Incentive Events

Duns Castle is flexible enough to be suitable for a wide variety of Corporate and incentive events. It is a spacious and secluded property with a wide variety of facilities. The historic 16th century great hall dining room can cater for up to 60 (seated) with fine service and genuine home cooked Scottish cuisine.

There are a number of public rooms where smaller meetings may take place. For large functions, marquees can be sited on the lawn and specialist caterers can be arranged. Leisure and sporting activities can be arranged on request. For incentive trips there is a large "wow" factor attached to this dramatic venue. Total security and privacy.
