HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING CAKE

There are thousands of designs for wedding cakes and it would be impossible to show all of them, so to make it special for the bride I offer a design service, each cake is made to the brides requirements. All decorations are handmade, to make sure the bride gets what she wants she needs to consider a few things.

TYPES OF DESIGN

The first thing you need to think about is what type of design you want, do you prefer the traditional, classic, contemporary, chocolate or would a novelty be more to your taste.

SIZE AND NUMBER OF CAKES

The next thing to think about is the number of guests you need to feed. Will you give cake to the evening guests as well, and do you want to display part of the cake in the evening Do you need to take some to work, or send out slices to relatives?

Most brides prefer the look of a 3 tier cake 6",9", and 12". Similarly, if you only have a small wedding, your cake will look more elegant if you have 2 small tiers rathar than 1 large one.

You could also have the option of having a plain iced cutting cake in the kitchen to provide extra portions.

CAKE SHAPES

Now think about cake shapes. Round is most brides favourite. Oval can look very elegant. Petal shape (lobed) is an interesting and pretty shape. Heart shaped for the romantics. Square for formal cakes, but not very popular. Or you can have a variety of shapes for a contemporary look.

TYPES OF CAKE

Most brides have a traditional rich fruit cake fed with alcohol. Just ask if you require a cake for a special diet, or if you don't want peel in it. You may wish to have one or more tiers as sponge or chocolate cake.

COLOUR OF ICING

Most brides choose the colour of the sugarpaste icing to match their dress - either white or ivory, but any colours including deep colours and air brush effects are possible.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO DISPLAY THE CAKE

This is purely a matter of choice, but will give a very different appearance to the same cakes. Many brides like the modern look of directly stacked cakes. Others like the traditional look of pillars, or a combination of stacked and pillars. Others like the look of the metal stands.

SUGAR FLOWERS AND SIDE DESIGNS

Some people like plain cakes, others lacy ones, others swags and bows or other fabric effects the choice is yours.

You will probably wish to finish your cake off with sugar flowers - the cakes crown and glory! Flowers can be made in any colour you wish.

WORK OUT YOUR BUDGET FOR THE CAKE

Sometimes if you are working to a tight budget your family may wish to make the cakes, this is ok but i do reserve the right to refuse poorly shaped cakes etc, i will icing and make your sugar flowers. Never be afraid to say if you are working to a tight budget as i can design cakes to suit all budgets.

ORDERING THE CAKE

Some brides book over a year in advance. Most book 6 to 12 months in advance, especially in the busy months. However short notice bookings of less than 2 - 3 months may be possible - please phone to check.
