What is the purpose of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

A Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a sort of coming of age ceremony for Jewish girls typically age 12 and boys age 13. It represents the point in an adolescent’s life when they are considered an adult and given more responsibilities. Typically in the ceremony, this responsibility is acknowledged when the adolescent partakes in his first aliyah (reading a passage from the Torah).
